Assigning positions to tarot spreads

Hi, this may sound like a silly question but does anyone have advice on assigning positions to tarot spreads when you aren’t using a specific spread?

For example, I find sometimes the question I have just doesn’t fit a preexisting spread. Maybe my questions are too complex but I wondered if anyone had advice?
