Is symbolism important when making tarot cards?

Hey everybody, I bought some blank cards to make my own tarot deck. At first I was doing a whole bunch of research on the cards and the symbolism behind the details, but I realized along the way that it felt more like I was doing an assignment instead of a personal project. When I make my deck is it important to include the common details (like the pomegranates and pillars for the High Priestess or the dog and cliff for The Fool), or can I basically completely do my own design? I feel like I would have a more personal connection to the cards if it’s entirely my own ideas, but if it could affect readings I would want to put the symbolic details on them. Thanks in advance!
