new to tarot – difference between big and small arcana?

So i dont get the difference between the card groups. I already understand that they are quintessences. Like i lay the celtic cross with only small arcana cards and add the numbers and get the quintessence with the digit sum. But i also read about people drawing big arcana cards. Wheres the difference? Am i using it wrong?
